Departed Onancock early the next morning knowing we had a short weather window. The sky's were overcast and we had a light breeze to start our 5 mile journey down the river and back into Chesapeake Bay. Coming out of the rivers can be tricky especially if there are few markings and islands around. Once we were in the bay we headed north. 4 miles into it we realized we were heading in the wrong direction. We needed to be heading NW. Since we had no way of skipping between the islands (to the west of us) due to all of the shallow areas our only option was to back track. Valuable time had been lost and the weather had deteriorated. A decision had to be made to either head back to Onancock or push forward to Crisfield. Bill thought he had somehow picked up a crab pot line because of the slight vibration in the steering wheel but couldn't recall doing so and attributed it to some other problem. With that being the concern the better place to have the boat serviced was Crisfield and so the the decision was made. We were Crisfield bound.
We had a following sea but the winds on the Chesapeake Bay had picked up so much the waves were rolling us from side to side. 10 miles out of Crisfield the storm was taking shape behind us and Bill pushed the gal harder.
Not too much later the storm intensified. Amazingly the storm never swallowed us. Whew!
After getting into Somers Cove Marina in Crisfield and relaxing a bit we headed downtown to dine at the Blue Crab Cafe. Caroline and her husband own this cafe and a B&B nearby. She said the area is made up of "borns here" and "comes here". They are of the later since they moved here after her husband retired from the Navy.
Here comes the sun, du dn du du
Here comes the sun, and I say
It's all right, du dn du du
Walked the mainstreet. Curved store front.
The city has been hit hard by the economy as evidenced by the downtown strip with many empty storefronts. Now the locals are committed to driving down to the end of the street,
making a U-turn and repeating. Referred to as running the loop. They call this entertainment and is enjoyed by young and old. We agreed we had no desire to move here, ever!
Isn't this gorgeous?
Ahhh yes, let's see it again.
We spent several nights in Urbanna a few days ago and had such a wonderful experience that we were excited to see 4 boats from Urbanna docking by us. We were invited to join them for dinner which initially we turned down because we had already had dinner on board but decided to head out with them. We had a fabulous time with the group. Turns out they are all members of the Urbanna Creek Yacht Club which was the marina around the bend from the city marina where we stayed.
During dinner at Crisfield Crabhouse and Grill, one of Crisfield's county commissioners presented all of us with a this necklace.
When we got back to the docks after dinner Bob gave me an apron which I will wear with pride and with fond memories of the Urbannites we met on our adventure......
View from "Tour de Loop" the morning we left.
Another view.
See our little guy? Say goodbye for we are heading west across the bay to Solomon's.
